Unless I am going to that country, no matter what the language, I shouldn’t have to learn the language.
If they want to come here, they better learn the language!
I don’t care if it is German, French, Italian, Farsi, Arabic, Spanish or Romulin.

I wouldn’t have a problem learning Spanish, IF it was MY choice. I studied French for several years, then moved to southern Cali. D’oh!! Felt like I totally wasted my time, which is sad - education should never be considered a waste of time. I was unable to find a good job down there because I didn’t habla - unbelievable.
I think everyone should study a foreign language, at least a little….

I think that the mean problem stems from the fact that a lot of Americans have to hear Spanish being spoken on a daily basis and since they do not and can not know what is being said they unconsciously take a negative attitude .”the whole we **** what we don’t understand” it is sad because if the beauty or all romantic languages (those originating in or around Rome)but hey it’s their loss right. Because I can speak English, and the world revolves around English a heck of a lot more than spanish. If we had to make a list of how many countries wanted trade with mexico, and how many countries wanted trade with USA, I’ll bet you the ratio for trade with USA would be 100,000,000 to 1, against mexico! Spanish is a dying language.

I prefer the sound of Italian, I find the sound of Spanish harsh/guttural. Also I enjoy opera - Italian is more important in this field. If I were to learn another Latin language I’d choose Italian. But there are other languages that take priority before I do something for self-indulgence. Mandarin, Turkish (better than now), French (better than now) are of more use (to me) than Spanish.
Where I come from, most illegal immigrants do NOT come from Spanish speaking countries. I am thinking logically, you are thinking emotionally.
EDIT: siervocal, you attacked me in private, I choose to respond in public. Your question asked for a personal opinion which I gave, with justification/elaboration. Your antagonistic attitude makes me even LESS inclined to learn Spanish (surprise!).

I love traveling in Central America, and it’s a pleasure that I can speak to Two-Thirds of the people on the planet with just spanish and english. Now all I have to do is learn chinese

I wouldn’t mind learning Spanish, or any other language if it was something I wanted. But to be forced into it by people who are too lazy to learn the local language is not something I will accept. In fact, I lived in Southern California for 24 years and made a point of not learning Spanish… I wanted nothing to do with it.
Of course I also believe that we shouldn’t help those who hurt us or steal from us. Thus we should remove industry from countries like Japan, China, and Korea as they blatantly steal and copy our ideas and products without more than lip service to trade agreements.
And as for illegal immigrants, they are invaders who are not wearing a uniform. Thus, according to the Geneva Convention, they are spies and can be summarily executed.
JuanCarlosNoMore on 29 Dec 2008 at 10:04 pm #
I am very much against the illegal immigrant problem we have today in this country. It is illegal/immoral and destructive to our country. That is the reason I am up in arms about it. I have seen the damage and experienced the dismay caused directly from it.
I used to travel extensively in Mexico. I nearly married a woman who was a MesoAmerican anthropologist. I worked hard to learn Spanish and was always friendly towards Latins in general.
I dance Salsa and Argen. Tango well enough to perform on stage and teach it. I almost always visit a Spanish speaking country at least once a year (mostly for dance now). I have had many good friends and good experiences with Mexicanos and Latins generally.
But as with all things and people, we experience the good and the bad in people as we spend time next to them.
I can undestand why people come up from Mexico to “steal” from us. That is a way of life in Mexico. Mexicanos get around the law y paying bribes to officials (the bite).
This orientation is not a good one to allow into our already well along in the department of corruption, country.
We don’t need them that bad at this time.
Nor do we need people who generaly will not learn to speak English and insist because of their large illegal numbers that they be accomodated in Spanish. In schools, government, hospitals and most other places in our accomodating society. Mexicans (80% of the illegals) will take and take and take if they are not stopped. Could be a human trait actually. This madness needs to be stopped. Come here and visit legally. If you want to work do so under the law and show an effort to learn our language if you are here past a week. We understand what learning a language can demand. It’s tough work. Show us that respect.
But dont come here and expect us to accomodate you any longer. It is breaking us and there is ugliness all around because of it.
This is one of many reasons that the language thing is such an issue. Ever picked up a box or looked at instructions and have to search for English cuz it’s all in Spanish? It eats at us. And it makes us even more angry when we go to the store and have to endure Spanish squealing brats running around misbehaving and not being controled. Ignorant parents. Inconsiderate parents. Parents from Mexico that don’t understand or care to understand. Kids will be kids. But Mom and Dad should know better. I could go on but I hope your honest, intelligent question is somewhat answered. I am terrible at language but they fascinates me. I know how hard they can be to learn. I enjoy cultures other than my own but Mexicanos are way out of line at this moment in time in our country and Americans need to and will do something about it.
My respect to you.

I have never liked the language. I mean that was the language that was encouraged years ago if you just wanted an easy credit. It wasn’t a good one to have on your college resume. Why….don’t know…but I know I was encouraged to take a more challenging language by my counselor.. Never had any interest in visiting any
Spanish speaking countries. So it was a no brainer for me. I took German for 2 years and couldn’t make the grades I needed because we had alot of German immigrant students that took it for an easy credit and I couldn’t keep up. There was only 2 of us that were really actually trying to learn it. But I learned enough to get by if needed. So then I ventured to French and did ok till college. I had an Austrian teacher in a class of Middle Easteners and while it was a great class I doubt it sounded much like real French with all our various accents. Just picture Arnold S. from California teaching French and the majority of responses with a Middle Eastern accent. I then had basic Latin for medical terms only. I’m older. I have no career ambitions right now. If I want to do something to keep my mind alert then I want to choose what I want to learn to do that. Not to be forced, in my own country to learn another language to just live here because too many are trying to get out of learning English. I don’t want to have to learn another language in order to work now or part time later to suppliment my retirement, to do a minimum wage job that supposidly no American wants to do when I have years of experience behind me ,an education, and simply want to just live my remaining years in peace. It’s not discrimination to just not like something. I have the right to not like a language or music or style of clothes or anything else. I don’t necessarily want to speak Chinese….I just love how artistic the written language is. I just want to be able to ask questions in English and get an answer in English in my own country. Is that too much to ask?

To the people answering this question: I want to say is that if you wanna say something know your facts and don’t be ignorant! First of all why would you not want to learn a new language and expand your mind? It doesn’t matter if its Spanish or not but i will guarantee it that if you are bilingual you will find a job faster and get paid more. My parents are teachers at an elementary school, but just b/c they speak two languages they get paid more than the ones that only speak English! Its better to be more knowledgeable than to be ignorant and stupid. Also for the ***** that said that the only two countries she would visit are Spain and Puerto Rico, I totally feel bad for you. I’ve visited many Latin American countries from Chile to Costa Rica and they are all beautiful countries with beautiful people and cultures. Also Spain does not speak the perfect Spanish! they just speak it differently and if you travel to different Latin countries you will see that in every country they speak it different!

One of my biggest regrets is not sticking to Spanish in school ! I spent most of my 20’s traveling and working in Latin American countries! I would be away from home from 6-9 month out of the year! I honestly believe I would have gotten further in this job (Corporate ladder) if I could have spoken fluent Spanish! My boss wanted to make me manager of the Venezuelan branch, but my inability to speak fluent Spanish hurt me ! I am somewhat intermediate! I love the Spanish language , and the culture, maybe because I spent so many years around it! Spanish is a beautiful language, I don’t care what anyone else says!!!!!

Most of the foreign phrases I know are not polite! (thanks to the NY public school system They are useful at times though…
I would learn Spanish - it would be handy, many of my friends speak various Spanish dialects. Unfortunately, we are so far from most other countries that we would never use most other languages except to order food, so we would lose them due to disuse. I studied a European language in school, but can’t recall most of it.
I think most people would rather visit the historic cities of Europe - they are well known and perhaps their ancestry is from Europe. I mean, who doesn’t dream of going to Paris? Some are also studying a particular area and may need a particular language. A chef might learn Italian or an artist/writer might study French.
Maybe some people are rejecting Latin American countries, but a small percentage at best. Americans love to travel - we just have to pay a lot to do so as we are far away from most countries due to the sheer size of the US, and we do not have much yearly vacation time (10 days is usual) When I was at school most people were taking Spanish as their language and as a result it was a hard class to get into.

Also Spain does not speak the perfect Spanish! they just speak it differently and if you travel to different Latin countries you will see that in every country they speak it different!
The only Latin I know is “SI VIS PACEM PARA BELLUM” And is the Latin I want to know.
La gente cree que el que habla español es Mexicano y de por si ilegal, mucha gente son tan ignorantes que no aprecian el valor de ser bilingue, y despues se quejan cuando a uno lo emplean por hablar 2 idiomas.
(thanks to the NY public school system
They are useful at times though…
If I move to Mexico I will learn Spanish you idiot. Why can’t they learn English are they stupid.
